The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has confirmed that Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko was on Friday arrested as he attempted to flee from the authorities.
In a tweet on their official handle read: "EACC Kenya confirms that Nairobi City County Governor Mike Sonko Mbuvi has been arrested while escaping arrest at a road block in Voi and is being transferred to Nairobi to face charges of corruption and economic crime."
Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Noordin Haji had just hours earlier ordered his arrest over irregular procurement processes amounting to Sh357, 390,299.
The DPP has preferred eight charges against Governor Sonko which were outlined as Conspiracy to commit an offence of corruption, willful failure to comply with law relating to procurement, conflict of interest, abuse of office, unlawful acquisition of public property, deceiving principal, money laundering and acquisition of proceeds of crime.
Sonko versus EACC
Governor Sonko launched an onslaught against the EACC claiming that the top officials had malicious intent against him.
The Nairobi County boss had also filed a law suit against EACC director of investigations Abdi Mohamud which until November 28 had failed to be heard.
"Let it be known that no amount of sponsoring of newspaper headlines, intimidation by EACC officials and clueless pressers by MPs can divert my attention from fighting graft and reclaiming back what belongs to the public," Sonko stated during a recent rant on Facebook.
DPP Haji on Friday, however, accused the governor of intimidating EACC officer with goons.
