Mariga turned away from IEBC after name misses from register of voters

Major setback

IEBC declines to to accept McDonald Mariga's nomination documents after his name is found missing from register of voters

The IEBC has invalidated the candidature of Jubilee candidate for the Kibra by-election, McDonald Mariga after his name was found missing from the register of voters.

Mariga submitted his papers at IEBC offices in Nairobi but the Returning Officer Beatrice Saki Muli informed him that his documents could not be accepted as he was not a registered voter - a requirement for one to run for a parliamentary seat.

The candidate was accompanied by former Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale and Lang'ata MP Nixon Korir.

The two attempted to plead his case, saying Mariga had registered after the 2017 election, hence his name's absence from the 2017 register.

The Kibra Returning Officer explained that her work was not to update the register but to check if the candidates were duly qualified before clearing them. Muli further advised Mariga that he had a right to appeal the matter.

"We have invalidated Mariga's nomination. I have given the reasons, and that's because his details were not found on the national register. There is a window period of when you can raise your grievances," Muli announced.

Mariga did not speak during the evening tussle.
