Kassim Sawa, who is eying the Matuga parliamentary seat under an Amani National Congress (ANC) ticket shot himself in the lower abdomen during an inspection at the airport.

Confirming the report, Airport Deputy OCPD Beatrice Kigalu told a local daily that Mr. Sawa was handling his firearm for clearance at the airport when he accidentally pulled the trigger.

"He is a licensed firearm holder. It happened when he was giving out the firearm as required in the security procedures at the facility," Ms Kigalu said.

Sawa was taken to Bomu Hospital where he is currently receiving treatment.

According to reports, the bullet was still lodged in his body when he was rushed to the hospital.

OCPD Kigalu mentioned that a probe had been launched into the matter.

"We have also launched our investigations on the same so that we get more details about the incident," she was quoted by the Nation as saying.
