Ahead of NTV’s explosive expose dubbed white alert highlighting food concerns and how millions of Kenyans consume toxic food products, the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) has issued a notice suspending five popular maize flour brands.

In a statement issued on Saturday, 09 November 2019, KEBS suspended Dola maize meal, Kifaru Maize Meal, Starehe Maize meal, Jembe Maize Meal and 210 Two Ten maize meal from selling, due to their high levels of aflatoxin.
The agency has suspended their permits and barred them from selling the affected maize meal products to the public.
“The respective permits have been suspended and the manufacturers instructed to discontinue manufacturing or offering for sale the affected maize meal products. Additionally, the manufacturers are required to recall all the substandard maize meal products from the market and institute corrective actions.” Read part of the statement.
It is not clear if the suspension is related with the expose that will lift the lid on the underhand dealings that put the lives of millions of Kenyans at risk.
KEBS stated that they had seized a number of those products but instructed supermarkets to also remove them from their shelves.
KEBS also urged the public to be vigilant and inform the upon encountering productsb that are suspected to be substandard.
