Autopsy reveals how David Mwai died inside a Police Station

David Mwai, is the suspect behind the shooting of ex-Garissa official

The postmortem confirmed that David Mwai died by hanging inside the police cell. However, the doctors did not conclude whether it was suicide or homicide.

"That is hanging but we have not concluded on the manner of death - whether it was suicide or homicide. That is not our duty, it is that of the investigators. We cannot ascertain at this point whether there was foul play," pathologist Sylvester Maingi said.

According to the results, Mwai was strangled by a nylon lining of a jacket and his neck was also found tied with pieces of grocery bags.

Mr Maingi and pathologist Grace Midigo did not find any injuries on Mwai's body indicating that a second party was involved in his death.

"He has no injuries in the head or defensive injuries in the hands. He also has no injuries n his stomach, the chest or the lower body," Dr Maingi said.

Before his death reports indicate that Mwai confessed to police officers of having been contracted to assassinate Mr. Muhtar.

On August 18, Mwai targeted the ex-Garissa official at the parking of a restaurant near the Kileleshwa mosque where he had attended 8 pm prayers.

CCTV footage shows the assassin meticulously closing in on his target, shooting him three times then walking away to a motorcycle that was waiting for him outside.

The shooting of Mukhtar saw flying squad detective conduct an operation which led to the arrest of Mwai, Garissa Governor Ali Korane’s bodyguards, a soldier said to be a county security adviser, the owner of a car that was trailing Muhtar for several days before his shooting, a bodaboda rider, and a woman.

Mr. Mukhtar is currently admitted at the Intensive Care Unit at a Nairobi hospital.

The families of Mukhtar and Mwai have cried foul stating that the death of the key suspect could be a cover-up of those behind the shooting of the ex-Garissa official.

Governor Korane, who has been interrogated by DCI, has denied any involvement in the shooting of Mukhtar or killing of Mwai.

Lawyer Kanjama, who was also allegedly targeted by the hired assassin, is representing Mukhtar in a case where he is challenging the education qualification of Governor Korane.
