Warning to all who love ready to eat meat

Kenyans have been warned against importing, buying or selling meat products from South Africa after the outbreak of listeriosis.

Director of Public Health Kepha Ombacho on Tuesday issued a statement warning against the importation of several ready to eat meat products from SA.

In the statement seen by Pulselive.co.ke, Mr. Ombacho listed some popular products that must be avoided.

"Reference is made to the outbreak of Listeriosis in South Africa associated with products from Enterprise food production factory and Rainbow Chicken Limited," the stament reads in part.

What is Listeriosis?

Listeriosis is food poisoning caused by eating foods contaminated with the Listeria monocytogenes - a bacteria found in soil and water and some animals, including poultry and cattle.

The outbreak was announced in South Africa this week after several children were presented with gastroenteritis in Soweto.

SA Minister of Health Aaron Motsoaledi warned locals against eating all processed meat.
