Why the Kenyan flag was flown during World Cup yesterday

Here it is

The curiosity of Kenyans was on Sunday piqued after the country’s flag was spotted being flown high during the Fifa World Cup game between Russia and Spain.

Kenyans were very quick to notice their flag and took to social media just to confirm that their eyes were not playing games on them.

Many were interested to know why their flag was being waved at the humongous stadium in Moscow yet the National football team, Harambee Stars, has never stepped foot in the World Cup.

Here is the reason

The Kenyan flag was being waved by a teenager from Marsabit known as Ogom Asugo.

Asugo is one of four teenagers attending the Fifa Foundation Festival as part of the Horn of Africa Development Initiative (Hodi) NGO delegation.

The festival saw 48 NGOs from 38 countries using football to propagate social change come together in Russia for 10 days.

The 18-year-old Kenyan uses football to bring about ethnic cohesion among his tribesmen.

Asugo was in the company of Hodi founder and  executive director Fatuma Abdulkadir. She founded the organisation to champion justice and development in northern Kenya through advocacy, facilitation of education, community cohesion (through football), and livelihood support programs.

Under the hashtag #shoot2scorenot2kill, Ms. Abdulkadir brings the youth together through football and encourages them to stop ethnic fights.
