The money was a donation from the DP and President Uhuru Kenyatta to lighten the financial burden that the team was struggling under.
While hosting the team on 19 Dec 2017 after it won the CECAFA, the DP pledged the amount after he learnt of the financial challenges that the team was going through.
The DP also promised to get a new state-of-the-art bus within two weeks but this too is yet to be fulfilled 4 months down the line.
DP Ruto who was then celebrating Kenya’s first major Title in a long time stated that “you guys have made us so proud across the country. I will make sure you get the buys in 2 weeks”.
The players who were looking forward to better times ahead are not impressed as they still have to rely on hired mini buses.
The financial state of Harambee Stars has instead gotten worse after betting firm Sportpesa withdrew its sponsorship deal.
Sportpesa cancelled major sponsorship deals after the government hiked taxes levied on betting firms, making it impossible for the firm to continue with the sponsorship deals.
On February 19, Harambee Stars coach Paul Putt resigned and moved to Guines where he has since been appointed the coach of the national team.
In an interview following his resignation, Putt named the DP along with FKF president Nick Mwenda as some of the people who did not give him the support and what he needed for the job as they promised before he signed the contract.
