The administration however did not mention those at the Nairobi campuses including the main campus that was at the epicentre of violent scenes last week.

At least 27 students were last week injured when police invaded lecture halls and hostels and clobbered them to quell riots that were ongoing.

The University Senate on Tuesday announced the university's closure due to the deteriorating security situation at the institution following a night of riots by students who demanded the immediate removal of Vice Chancellor Prof. Peter Mbithi for allowing police into the university.

“UON senate has today closed the University with immediate effect due to the deteriorating security situation. Students have been asked to vacate the halls of residence with immediate effect but not later than 9.00am,” read a tweet from the institution.

The students also protested against the police brutality witnessed against them last week when they demanded for the release of their former student leader and now Embakasi East MP Babu Owino.

Amateur videos circulating across social media showed General Service Unit officers clobbering students in their halls of residence while others were forced to frog march at gunpoint at the institution.

The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) appealed to the 27 students who were injured by police during the demonstrations not to leave for their homes until they recorded statements over the incident.
