Philip Murgor reports former MP to police over incident at Tob Cohen's burial

"He called me the F word and threatened me"

Philip Murgor accuses former MP Patrick Muiruri of threatening him in complaint made to Parklands Police Station

City lawyer Phillip Murgor has made an formal complaint to the police against former Gatundu North MP Patrick Muiruri who allegedly threatened him during the burial of murdered dutch tycoon Tob Cohen.

Murgor, who is representing Cohen's wife Sarah Wanjiru - one of the suspects in the case - made the complaint through a letter to the OCS at Parklands Police Station.

The lawyer said Muiru verbally and physically threatened him during Cohen's burial which was held on Tuesday at a Jewish ceremony in Nairobi.

Murgor said trouble started after he asked the former MP's daughter not to go to the graveside.

Muiruri is said to have responded by insulting the lawyer using the F word and threatening unspecified action against him.

Yesterday (September 24, 2019) at the funeral of the Late Tob Cohen, I was confronted by one Patrick Muiruri, a Kiambu politician who menacingly shouted at me not to pick on his daughter, but on him if I wanted a confrontation: (earlier, on instructions from my client, I had politely requested the daughter of Muiruri to leave the cemetery, as the funeral was agreed to be a private ceremony for family only)".

Thereafter, he insulted me in the following words ‘f**k you’ and shouted: ‘I will deal with you outside’. As he advanced towards me, he was restrained by Mr Chege Kirundi, and Mr Cliff Ombeta – advocates who luckily were on hand. The incident was witnessed by George Ouma, an advocate," Murgor stated.

The former Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) said he was concerned by the threat based on statements that Muiruri has made regarding the case.

Muiruri, who previously worked as a private investigator, said he had talked to Cohen on the night he went missing and that the Dutch tycoon had told him Wairimu should have been held liable in the event that something happened to him.

"Given the unexplained leading role, interest and positions taken publicly by Mr Muiruri in the case facing my client Mrs Sarah Cohen, I take this outburst as a threat in an attempt to intimidate me as an advocate for Mrs Cohen, I have therefore taken the decision to record my complaint with yourself, and ask that you immediately commence investigation regarding the intentions of and the threats by the said Mr Patrick Muiruri,” Murgor concluded.
