The Kisumu County government has pledged to erect a stature in honour of Kenya's first vice president Jaramogi Oginga Odinga.

Speaking during the 25th commemoration of Oginga's death, Kisumu Governor Anyang' Nyong'o noted that the patriarch had made a major contribution toward the attainment of Kenya's independence.

"Jaramogi's life provides us with an opportunity to transform the society for better," the governor noted.

The county government facilitated a two-day celebration of the former vice president in Kisumu with the governor's announcement marking the climax of the celebrations on the final day.

Governor Nyong'o also addressed dissent over his administration's decision to put up billboards in line with the celebrations.

"I heard some youths complaining about the billboards; let me tell them that we will place a statue, so that as they walk in the Kisumu streets, they are aware of the leaders who sacrificed for the freedoms we enjoy today," he explained.
