Mike Sonko replaces Polycarp Igathe

Nairobi governor Mike Sonko makes changes in his administration

In a letter dated 15 February 2018, former Nairobi City Clerk John Gakuo has been appointed to head the Nairobi regeneration Committee, a post that was held by Igathe until his resignation.

The Committee headed by Tourism Cabinet Secretary Najib Balala will seek to transform Nairobi into a modern-day metropolis.

It will focus on energy, transport, housing, infrastructure, land issues as well as information and communications technology.

Gakuo is credited with maintaining a clean city during his tenure and leading efforts to clean the heavily polluted Nairobi River.

Working with the then Minister for Environment, he was also the brain behind the smoking zones established at different areas of the City.

Polycarp Igathe resigned on 31 Jan 2018, relinquishing all his roles.

In his terse but brief resignation letter, Igathe noted that he made the decision after failing to earn the trust of his boss.

His resignation came after news circulated that he was not in good terms with Sonko but they duo consistently refuted the claims.
