MPs pass bill requiring public wi-fi all over Kenya
The bill which was presented to the National Assembly by Nominated MP Godfrey Osostsi, was given the go ahead on the account that access to the internet was of importance to the nation.
Osostsi pointed out that the internet was part of the day to day life in terms of communication and acquiring information.
“In fact, we are now in an era called the internet of things, where internet is really going to drive our lives,” remarked Osostsi.
The lawmaker explained that the government will form a partnership with private companies such as Liquid Telcom to achieve the plan.
A Step Forward
The vocal leader highlighted that, “We want to get to a level where this country will maximize the use of the internet,”
The former Amani National Congress (ANC) Secretary General noted that a huge number of Kenyans did not have access to the internet.
The plan by the Osostsi will be seen as a solution to the failed free internet promise individual counties had been assured for its residents.
Former Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero failed to honour his pledge of free wifi in the city despite allocating Sh 100 million to the project.
Other counties that have faced a similar situation include Kiambu and Nakuru Counties.
