Uhuru's tough order leaves Sonko frustrated

Nairobi residents have complained over hawkers filling the CBD

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko is reportedly a frustrated man by the tough conditions that State House operatives have been put in place at City Hall.

It has now emerged that President Uhuru Kenyatta and his team had set tough conditions before giving Sonko the Jubilee ticket, including influencing Polycarp Igathe to be his running mate.

It has also become apparent that Sonko remains a ceremonial head of the County while Igathe, through State House, runs the show at City Hall.

The Star on Thursday reported its sources giving account of a meeting at Harambee House where President Kenyatta told Sonko to concentrate on politics and allow professionals to do administrative tasks.

“The President told the boss to focus on city politics and leave Igathe to run the county. He [Sonko] did not utter a word, only nodded,” one source stated.

During the meeting, the President also picked the Deputy Governor and Tourism CS Najib Balala to co-chair the technical committee on the special task-force on programmes to improve Nairobi's social and economic sector.

Igathe’s elevation is reported to have angered Sonko even though he has appeared calm during public functions.

Further, State House has forwarded numerous individuals to key positions in the Nairobi County Government, most notable being Peter Kariuki who will serve as the County Secretary.

Kariuki had previously served as the head of Presidential Delivery Unit.
