Matiang'i sends special message to Raila supporters

During the Monday demonstrations, one was shot and three others injured when a speeding vehicle ran over them.

Acting Interior CS Dr Fred Matiang’i has urged Raila Odinga supporters to stop engaging in demonstrations in a bid to jerk out IEBC officials.

Speaking in Nyamira during the burial of Johnson Gichana, Nyamira County women representative Jerusha Momanyi’s father-in-law, Dr Matiang’i warned that the daily demonstration would not solve the crisis but is a ploy to “sabotage the economic gains made in Kenya”.

“Those people are not exercising their rights, but are engaging in economic sabotage. Shun the demonstrations,” CS Matiangi told mourners.

The call by Dr Matiang’i to Nasa supporters came even as the Odinga led team vowed to scale up protests from two days to three days a week to mount more pressure on IEBC CEO Ezra Chiloba to resign and 11 other  officials ahead of repeat polls.

The Opposition leader is also demanding that Jubilee scrap off the proposed contentious poll law amendments.

“We are a hardworking people. We should not be misled to join meaningless demonstrations,” Matiang’i said adding that the presidential rerun will be held on October 26 by law.

“As a minister in charge of internal security, I want to assure you the government is ready to support the IEBC, which is a constitutionally mandated body to do elections,” he added.

CS Matiang’i’s sentiments come amid fears after a vehicle speedily roughed up Nasa supporters in the capital Nairobi, injuring three as one was shot in the sidelines of the ugly demos on Monday.

The shot middle aged man was accused of pick-pocketing and was allegedly taking refuge in the crowd.
