Was Ruto targeting Uhuru with these comments during last night’s interview?

Analysis of 3 statements made during Ruto's interview

Ruto dominated the interview and managed, to a large extent, to fight off claims of bad blood between him and his boss – President Uhuru Kenyatta.

However, there were subtle comments that the DP made and which betray the hostility that characterises the new relationship between the two senior most Jubilee leaders.

Moreover, one wonders if the Deputy President believes in the leadership of President Kenyatta who is the country’s number one leader and custodian of the Jubilee vision.

Shortly after, Ruto complained that the media had unfairly targeted him in auditing the wealth held by different politicians.

At this point, the hustler made two subtle statements that deserve an interrogation.

He complained that other politicians had not been audited on what they own and went ahead to claim that there are “people who own things in this country and am not one of them”.

Various reports, including the respected Forbes Magazine, have placed President Kenyatta and his family as the wealthiest people in the country, could Ruto have been referring to them? Your guess is as good as mine.

While defending his wealth as a result of hardwork, the former chicken seller from Sugoi used a random quote from Kakamega which he claimed was “very profound to him”.

“I heard in Kakamega someone who said that kijana ya maskini akipata ameiba, lakini kijana wa tajiri akiiba, ni ya baba yake (when a poor man’s son gets wealth, it’s stolen, but when the rich man’s son steals, they say it belongs to the father),” Ruto stated.

The fact that he declined to explain why the quote was profound, and the comment came when his allies had been calling for Mzee Jomo Kenyatta’s wealth to be audited – adds on to my theory that the subtle statements were directed at President Kenyatta and meant to slow his fight against corruption.

How this silent duel ends, only time will tell.
