Meet the smart female lawyer who amazed Kenya’s Supreme Court

She was trained at Senior Counsel James Orengo's law firm.

As the hearing continued, a youthful female lawyer representing one of the petitioners became the subject of attention and admiration as she made concise arguments before the Supreme Court.

The brilliant lawyer, Julie Soweto, proved to be an exception from such high profile cases that have traditionally involved elderly male lawyers.

Her presence reminded many of a similar appearance by lawyer Kethi Kalonzo who represented one of the parties in the 2013 Supreme Court case. Incidentally, Soweto’s is Ms Kilonzo’s personal lawyer.

Ms Soweto is one of the finest female lawyers in the country and holds a master’s degree in law from the prestigious University of Pretoria and an LLB from the University of Nairobi.

Her career as a lawyer has seen Soweto work for some of the best legal minds. She has seven years of experience as an associate lawyer at Senior Counsel James Orengo’s law firm JAB Orengo Advocates.

In 2012, the alumni of the Kenya High School started her own law firm Soweto & Company Advocates.

She is representing activists Njonjo Mue and Khelef Khalifa, alongside lawyer Harun Ndubi.

Another notable presence at the Supreme Court was the young Melissa Ng’ania who was part of President Kenyatta’s legal team.
