A section of opposition leaders roll out initiative to force the country to a referendum

Punguza Mzigo initiative launched to collect 1 Million signatures in fresh push for referendum

The initiative will be spearheaded by Thirdway Alliance’s Dr. Ekuru Aukot and will seek to reduce the number of Members of Parliament from the current 416 to 194.

In support of the initiative which was launched today in Lavington, Aukot revealed that Kenya is currently overrepresented.

He further divulged that the move will see the country significantly reduce the wage bill from the current “trillions” to 5 billion annually.

Under the proposed system, each of the 47 counties will be turned into a constituency with each electing a male and female representative to parliament.

Each constituency will also elect a male and female representative to the senate bringing the total number to 188.

Additionally, 6 members will be nominated to parliament to represent special interest groups, bringing the total number to 194.

Aukot divulged that the electoral commission has already approved the decision by Thirdway Alliance to select the signatures electronically.

Aukot who lost in the recent presidential elections disclosed that Thirdway Alliance would embark on an ambitious tour to inform the public of this initiative and collect signatures in support of the same.

Aukot declared himself the official opposition leader after Raila Odinga boycotted last year’s repeat polls. Similar claims were made after the NASA leader reached an agreement with President Uhuru Kenyatta to work together to unite and heal Kenya.
