Details have emerged of a scheme by Deputy President William Ruto’s allies to stage a coup within the ruling Jubilee party and wrestle the party from President Uhuru Kenyatta and his confidants who are believed to be pulling the shots within the party even as the party stares at an imminent death.

While the Tangatanga team allied to Dr Ruto boast of having the numbers in parliament, the Kieleweke team behind President Kenyatta control State power and has key party officials on its side, something that DP Ruto’s foot-soldiers are keen to bring to an end.

With the terms of the current Jubilee party officials ending in March, reports indicate that DP Ruto’s side are plotting a coup to install loyalist who will advance his 2022 political agenda.

Current officials led by Secretary General Raphael Tuju and former vice chair David Murathe have in the past been singled out as obstacles to DP Ruto’s 2022 bid.

Reports further indicate that the Tangatanga wing is pushing for a party meeting and intend to push a proposal to replace party officials in time amidst concerns that Murathe is still listed as a party official.

Perhaps aware of the coup plot, Jubilee A (as the wing allied to President Kenyatta is referred to in political circles are not keen on holding a party meeting as demanded by the Tangatanga wing.

The coup plan also entails swaying public opinion and sympathy towards DP Ruto and paint the Kieleweke wing as ungrateful and power hungry individuals whose selfish interests cannot allow them to back Ruto despite public pronouncements in 2017 that Ruto would take over from Uhuru.

To this end, several political outfits have been formed, including Inua mama chaired by Alice Wahome.

Plan B

Propaganda and mobilisation along the Kieleweke and Tangatanga fault lines will also be part of the plan in this elaborate scheme.

Leaving nothing to chance, the Tangatanga wing is understood to have a Plan B just in case the coup plot fails.

This entails registering an alternative political party for Dr Ruto. Already, the high number of new political outfits seeking registration has aroused suspicion and concerns that the move is being driven by senior politicians.

Topping the list of parties being watched keenly is Jubilee Republican Party.
