Raila flys to Nigeria to attend the opening of former Nigerian President Obasanjo Presidential Library

Raila and Obasanjo go way back and enjoy a very close relationship which has survived the tests of time.

 

Raila flew to Nigeria to attend the grand opening of the his long time friend, Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library on Saturday.

Dennis Onyango, the Opposition chief's spokesman, said in a statement that he will be back next week.

Last time Raila was in Nigeria he called on African countries to fight corruption and allow democracy to flourish, he added that countries should invest in credible elections to ensure continued economic growth.

"It is not a matter of creating new anti-corruption institutions or revamping the existing ones," the Cord chief told Nnamdi Azikiwe University students and officials.

"The key is a president or a prime minister who is genuinely committed to eradicating corruption, commands trust and confidence of people and is prepared to lead from the top."

Raila while launching his memoir in 2013, “The Flame of Freedom Olusegun Obasanjo was the chief guest and even wrote the book foreword.

He later described Raila as “an indomitable man.” and said he exemplified the spirit of true leadership which is embedded in sacrifice.

“Any leadership devoid of sacrifice is not worth its name. Raila is a true leader. He has shown leadership of sacrifice through his life and actions,” Obasanjo said.

Two years later while launching third volume of the memoir “My Watch” in Nairobi, Raila was the key speaker and paid glowing tribute to the former Nigerian President.

In the book, Obasanjo revealed how deep their friendship ran to the time Raila was in the opposition during President Moi era.

“I was invited by Raila for the final funeral rites for his father, Jaramogi Oginga, and for the dedication of his mausoleum in Kenya” writes Obasanjo in must read captivating memoir.

Tanzanian retired president Benjamin Mkapa and Liberian president Ellen Johnson Sirleaf are among some of the high dignitaries attending the grand opening.
