Twist in court as lawyer Cliff Ombeta insists number used to call billionaire belongs to the President Uhuru

Popular city lawyer Cliff Ombeta on Tuesday threw a spanner into the works after claiming that the number used to call Sameer Group Chairman Naushad Merali belonged to President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Ombeta is representing seven of the suspects who have been arraigned in court over the for allegedly conning Merali Sh10 million by mimicking President Kenyatta’s voice.

The suspects are said to have called Merali on mobile number 0722208842 and convinced him to send them Sh10 million as a down payment for a parcel of land in Nairobi’s Milimani area.

The DCI started an investigation after which the DPP charged Joseph Waswa, Duncan Muchai, Isaac Wajekeche, William Simiyu, David Luganya, Gilbert Kirunja and Anthony Wafula with forgery-related crimes.

Your honor, you will notice that the complain was only made at the DCI, there is no OB number number. Let’s come to the truth. This number actually belongs to the President, that’s a fact. I have been called and tongue-lashed on it, but it is a fact!” Ombeta told a Nairobi court.

The lawyer was protesting the prosecution’s request to hold the suspects for ten more days to conclude the investigations.

Ombeta said there was no need for such a probe since the prosecutors and the DCI had enough time to complete investigations before the arrests.
