Community leader docked for allegedly using pestle on wife

The prosecutor said that the accused assaulted his wife by punching her in the face and using a pestle to hit her, breaking two of her fingers.

A 54-year-old community leader,

The accused is facing a two-count charge of assault and threat to life.

He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The prosecutor, Sgt. Kehinde Omisakin, told the court that the accused committed the offences sometime in April 2013 and in June 2017, at Trade Fair Complex, Alaba, in Lagos.

She said that the accused assaulted his wife, Anthonia Igboeli, by punching her in the face and using a pestle to hit her, breaking two of her fingers.

Omisakin said that the accused had also threatened to burn down the shop of the complainant.

The offences contravened Sections 56(1) and 172 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The Chief Magistrate, Mr A.T. Elias, granted the accused bail based on self recognisance and adjourned further hearing until Aug. 7.
