The detention of key political opponents during an election cycle is a recurring phenomenon in several African nations.

This tactic, which sees presidential aspirants jailed, placed under house arrest, or legally entangled immediately before, during, or after a vote, is again in focus as Tanzania heads to the polls.

As Tanzanians prepare to vote in their general election on October 29, 2025, one of the country's most prominent opposition figures, Tundu Lissu, is in prison.

Here are some of the continent's most high-profile cases where presidential aspirants were locked up during the election period.

<a target="_blank" class="editor-link" href="https://www.pulselive.co.ke/articles/news/politics/tundu-lissus-biography-political-journey-assassination-attempt-and-legacy-2025051911470424834">Tundu Lissu, the chairman of Tanzania's main opposition party</a>, Chadema, is currently in detention as the country holds its general election.

Lissu was arrested on April 9, 2025, after addressing a public rally calling for constitutional and electoral reforms under the banner 'No Reforms, No Elections'.

He was subsequently charged with treason and publishing false information, charges that carry a potential death penalty.

Lissu, who <a target="_blank" class="editor-link" href="https://www.pulselive.co.ke/articles/news/world/tanzanian-opposition-figure-returns-from-exile-to-run-for-president-2024082102491702980">was the main opposition candidate in the 2020 election</a>, was expected to be a primary contender for the presidency again.

Following his arrest, his party, Chadema, was barred from participating in the October 2025 polls.

On October 24, 2025, just days before the election, Tanzania's High Court adjourned his treason trial to November 3, 2025.

The decision ensures that Lissu, who has been in remand prison for over six months, remains incarcerated throughout the entire election process.

<h3>Bassirou Diomaye Faye (Senegal, 2024)</h3>

In one of the most dramatic political turnarounds, Bassirou Diomaye Faye was elected President of Senegal on March 24, 2024, just days after being released from prison.

Faye was arrested in April 2023, nearly a year before the election.

He was charged with 'contempt of court, defamation, and acts likely to compromise public peace' after he published a social media post criticising the judiciary's handling of a case against his party's leader, Ousmane Sonko.

When Sonko was himself jailed and disqualified from running, he named the imprisoned Faye as his replacement candidate.

Faye's candidacy was validated by Senegal's Constitutional Council while he was still in prison.

Following intense public pressure and widespread protests against the election's postponement, an amnesty law was passed.

Faye was released from prison on March 14, 2024, just 10 days before the rescheduled election.

He won the presidency in the first round.

<h3>Robert Kyagulanyi / Bobi Wine (Uganda, 2021)</h3>

Robert Kyagulanyi, the leader of the National Unity Platform (NUP), <a target="_blank" class="editor-link" href="https://www.pulselive.co.ke/articles/news/world/ugandas-popstar-mp-bobi-wine-to-contest-2021-presidential-vote-2024081811230717902">was the main challenger in Uganda</a>'s January 14, 2021, general election.

While his campaign was marked by <a target="_blank" class="editor-link" href="https://www.pulselive.co.ke/articles/news/world/uganda-police-arrest-pop-star-mp-bobi-wine-teargas-supporters-2024081913432583607">multiple arrests and violent confrontations with security forces</a>, the most critical detention occurred immediately after the vote.

As vote counting began, military and police forces surrounded Kyagulanyi's home, placing him under house arrest.

He was held in his home for 11 days, unable to meet with his party officials or lawyers to prepare a legal challenge to the results being announced.

Authorities stated the detention was a 'preventive measure' to stop him from inciting violence.

Uganda's High Court later ruled that the house arrest was illegal.

<h3>Kizza Besigye (Uganda, 2016 &amp; 2006)</h3>

Dr Kizza Besigye, the four-time presidential candidate for the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), has been a principal example of this phenomenon.

His campaigns in 2006 and 2016 stand out.

<ul><li>2016 Election: Besigye was arrested multiple times in the week of the February 18, 2016, election, including on polling day itself. Immediately after the vote, he was placed under house arrest for over 40 days as the results were declared. He was later jailed in a state prison and charged with treason after holding a mock 'swearing-in' ceremony.</li></ul>

<ul><li>2006 Election: After returning from exile to run for president, Besigye was arrested in November 2005. He was charged with treason, concealment of treason, and rape. Besigye was famously nominated as the FDC's presidential candidate while he was in prison. He was granted bail by the High Court on January 2, 2006, allowing him only weeks to campaign before the February election. The rape charge was later dismissed.</li></ul>

Reckya Madougou was the chosen presidential candidate for Les Démocrates (The Democrats), Benin's largest opposition party, for the April 2021 election.

She was arrested on March 3, 2021, just weeks before the poll, after her candidacy had been formally filed.

Authorities accused her of 'financing terrorism' and plotting to disrupt the election by assassinating political figures.

In December 2021, Madougou was sentenced to 20 years in prison by a special court.

She remains imprisoned, with human rights organisations and her supporters maintaining the charges were politically motivated to remove the incumbent's most significant challenger.

These cases highlight a recurring pattern across the continent where the electoral period is marked by the detention of key opposition presidential aspirants.

Ugandan opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine has weighed in on the recent wave of abductions in Kenya.

While expressing sympathy, the politician noted that going by the current trend, Kenya is quickly moving from being the East African region’s beacon of hope, adding that the&nbsp;country is also becoming worse for government critics.

He urged Kenyans to uphold the rule of law and resist any attempt to return the nation back to the dark days

He opined that repression is best dealt with before it takes root, urging Kenyans to make use of constitutional and legal means to defend the Constitution.

His remarks come at a time when the government is under scrutiny following the abduction of several Kenyans.

<h3>Gachagua claims secret unit involved in abductions</h3>

Among those abducted are Kenyans who had criticised the government on social media.

Inspector General Douglas Kanja denied any involvement of the National Police Service amid piling pressure on authorities to produce the missing Kenyans.

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua claimed that a secret unit that is not under the control of the IG is behind the abductions, placing the blame squarely on President William Ruto.

The President on his part, promised to bring the abductions to an end while urging parents to guide and protect their children, assuring them that the government would play its part.

Among the most recent cases is the disappearance of Steve Mbisi, Billy Mwangi, Peter Muteti, Bernard Kavuli, Naomi (found), cartoonist Gideon Kibet alias Kibet Bull and his brother Rony Kiplagat.

He revealed that he scored five points in a subject combination of Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics (P.C.M.) in the Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (U.A.C.E.) exams.

"I got five points in UACE," said Cool who added that he got nine aggregate in Uganda Certificate of Education (U.C.E) Exams.

“O-Level, I got nine points. A-Level, I got five points,” he said.

Bebe Cool said he left the country for Kenya after getting the certificate.

"The moment I got the certificate, I handed it to my mother and left for Kenya,” he said.

Bebe Cool confirmed that he has the U.A.C.E certificate. "Very much so," he said when Simon Muyanga Lutaaya asked if he has it during his show dubbed Ganga Muka on Baba TV.

Cool said that he was in the same school as Thomas Tayebwa, the deputy speaker of Parliament.

He said Tayebwa was a year ahead of him at Makerere College School.

"He was my very good friend. He was one year ahead of me,” he said.

Bebe Cool went to Agha Khan Primary School, which was called Kampala Primary School at the time, then Kitante Hill School for O-Level. At Makerere College, Cool wasn’t promoted to Senior Six, so he joined Kololo Senior Secondary School.

He boasted about how he was academically superior to his nemesis Bobi Wine, as the latter graduated with a diploma in music, dance, and drama (M.D.D) from Makerere University in 2003.

The Ugandan government under President Yoweri Museveni has finally withdrawn its military and Police from<a href="https://www.pulselive.co.ke/news/local/bobi-wine-petitions-un-protesting-his-continued-illegal-house-arrest-through-lawyer/lnkb8wh"> Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine’s premises.</a>

The withdrawal of the troops come hours after the Ugandan High Court gave an order demanding the men in uniform to vacate Wine’s premises with immediate effect.

In a ruling delivered on Monday, the court also found that the continued detention of the opposition politician, was unlawful and unconstitutional.&nbsp;

The High Court ruled in favour of the petition lodged by Wine's legal team who claimed Wine's house arrest was unlawful.

However, the Uganda government claimed the restrictions were simply preventive measures for Wine's own protection, and also to make sure no illegal protests take place during the election period.

Wine had been under a house arrest at his Magere&nbsp;home after a disputed&nbsp;election returned President Yoweri Museveni to office for a sixth term.

The He has not left his home since he cast his ballot on Thursday January 14. He was prevented from leaving the premises from by soldiers and police surrounded the compound.

The soldiers also preventing anyone from entering or leaving. A planned visit by the US Ambassador to Uganda, for instance, was blocked by security officials.

In a tweet, Wine mentioned; “This has been the situation at my house these past days. Aside from the military and police surrounding us, military and police helicopters have been consistently hovering over our residence in breach of our privacy rights. Cowards! #WeAreRemovingADictator”.

Ugandan comedian Patrick Salvador has ignited a heated debate after weighing in on the continued detention of NUP Presidential candidate Bobi Wine.

Salvado who is President Yoweri Museveni’s diehard supporter, condemned the unlawful and continued detention of Bobi Wine and his family, making it clear that he doesn’t agree with everything the government does.&nbsp;

In an update seen by Pulse Live, the funnyman pointed out that no country in Africa has managed to achieve a free and fair election, let alone Uganda.

On Friday morning, incumbent President Yoweri Museveni had taken a significant early lead in the presidential race, according to preliminary results released by the electoral commission.

Museveni had garnered 1,536,205 votes (65.02%), while his main rival Bobi Wine, had 647,146 votes (27.39%) from 8,310 polling stations. The country has a total of 34,684 polling stations.

Ugandan Presidential Candidate Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine was on Tuesday forced to cut short his Radio interview with Hot 96 after military raided his Kampala home.

Wine who was speaking to Jeff Koingange and Professor Hamo, said that the military was beating up his security team while forcing their way into his compound.

“So I am sorry even right now as we speak, we are being raided by the military. I have to end the interview because I can see soldiers beating up my security guards. I have to go down and give it attention,” said Bobi Wine during the interview.

In a tweet, the Presidential hopeful went on to reveal that all his security guards were arrested in the raid.

“The army has this morning raided my home, arrested all my security guards and anyone they could see around my premises. No reason for the arrest was given.
