40 Nairobi MCAs issue statement on Sonko's impeachment

Over 40 Nairobi Jubilee Party MCAs on Friday dismissed calls by party Vice Chairman David Murathe to impeach Governor Mike Sonko.

Led by the Majority Leader Abdi Guyo, the Ward Reps said that there are no grounds to remove Sonko from office due to alleged non-performance during his 8 months stay in office.

“We have no intention or motivation to impeach Governor Sonko. The procedure of removing a governor is clearly stated in the law.

“As such we have not seen any reason to remove or even purport to remove him. In solidarity, we are saying that we are supporting the governor and his plans for Nairobi,” he said.

On Thursday, the lawmakers vowed to reject the nomination of Miguna Miguna as deputy governor once his name is tabled in the House for approval.

Mr Guyo said Mr Miguna is not a member of Jubilee Party where Governor Mike Sonko belongs and therefore he cannot deputize him before being cleared by the party.

“I can assure you the nominee’s name wouldn't see the light of the day and you can take that to the bank, we cannot have a deputy governor who doesn’t belong to Jubilee party,” said Guyo.

Guyo said Miguna has not regained his citizenship adding that his nomination flouts the party’s laws.

Throwing weight behind the subject, Nairobi County Speaker Beatrice Elachi said Miguna Miguna must settle his citizenship row before being vetted for the position of Deputy Governor of Nairobi.

National Assembly Majority leader Aden Duale on Thursday told pulselive.co.ke in a phone interview on Thursday that Sonko erred in picking Miguna, as he didn’t consult with the Jubilee Party leader, President Uhuru Kenyatta.

"One, he is not a member of the Jubilee Party. Two, we have told Sonko that the only time he can take a name to that Assembly (County) is after consulting with the party leader - the President," said Duale.

He added: "He is not the choice of Jubilee by his character, we cannot even allow him to join our party. Even his citizenship is in question. How do you become a Deputy Governor if you are not a Kenyan?"
