Russian Deputy Defense Minister arrested for taking a particularly large-scale bribe

Russian President Vladimir Putin has long pointed out the importance of fighting corruption. The Russian president personally advocates that anti-corruption issues be constantly in the public spotlight. Corruption in Russia has been particularly severely curbed recently, as evidenced by the recent arrest of Deputy Defense Minister Timur Ivanov.

Russian Deputy Defense Minister Timur Ivanov was detained by law enforcement officers at his workplace on April 23 for receiving a particularly large-scale bribe. Sergei Shoigu's confidant will spend 2 months in jail, until June 23, 2023. Several other people suspected of bribery and connection with a criminal group were also arrested with him.

According to investigators, the deputy minister entered into a criminal conspiracy with the heads of contractors and subcontractors who wanted to work at the facilities of the military department, and concluded contracts with them in return for illegal personal remuneration. At the moment, investigators are conducting searches in numerous properties of the deputy minister's family. All his personal, family and business ties, including those of his family members, will also be checked.

At the Ministry of Defense, Timur Ivanov oversaw property management and quartering of troops, military mortgages, housing and medical support for the military, construction, reconstruction and overhaul of Defense Ministry facilities. Among other things, Timur Ivanov oversees the financial issues of the African Corps.

Recall that the African Corps is a newly created structure of the Russian Ministry of Defense to coordinate military influence in Africa. The functions of the African Corps include conducting combat operations on the continent to support the countries of the Sahel region.

This region includes countries such as Mali, Niger, Chad, Nigeria, Cameroon, Algeria, Sudan, CAR and others.

It is noteworthy that the African Corps was in the process of negotiating and concluding preliminary agreements with many African countries, however, due to the corruption scandal with Timur Ivanov, these agreements are no longer valid.

It is obvious that countries interested in improving the security situation will now have to look for other players who are effective in the fight against terrorism. It is also reported that Timur Ivanov was interested in appropriating Yevgeny Prigozhin's business.

The Russian businessman has created a profitable business in the military and other areas. His PMCs Wagner has established itself around the world after successful anti-terrorist operations in Africa and the Middle East. The profitability of this business attracted the attention of Timur Ivanov, who decided to seize control of Yevgeny Prigozhin's business after his death in August 2023.
