Uhuru Kenyatta's relatives among those who have featured in scandals with corruption rising by 240%
Despite his public commitment to fighting corruption, President Kenyatta’s sister Nyokabi Kenyatta and his cousin Kathleen Kihanya were at the centre of the 2017 Afya House scandal at the Ministry of Health.
In controversial circumstances, a company associated with the two relatives of the president went ahead and pocketed hundreds of millions of shillings and made it to the list of companies that should get preferential treatment for tenders reserved for the youth, women and the disabled.
Amidst public outrage, first lady Margaret Kenyatta was forced to cancel the 2017 Beyond Zero Marathon, a noble idea to raise funds for her beyond zero campaign.

Coming in an election year, the scandal took a political dimension with a section of politicians accusing the president’s family of involvement in corruption and dismissing first lady Margaret Kenyatta’s beyond Zero campaign.
A statement from the first lady read in part that “I have never been willing to politicize this agenda. As a consequence I feel it necessary to cancel the First Lady’s Half Marathon this year”.
A year later, the President’s uncle, businessman Gathecha Muhoho has been named in the on-going NYS scandal probe in which 9 Billion public funds were lost.
An explosive dossier by ousted Youth PS Lilian Omollo has revealed that Head of Public Service Joseph Kinyua invited the ousted PS to a meeting in Muthaiga where an agent acting on behalf on Mr. Muhoho’s company pushed for payments to be made to the company owned by Kenyatta’s uncle.
According to a statement by the ousted PS, she had stopped payment to Petro Kenya despite a push to release the payments to the company.

She had also encountered resistance in verifying payments to companies that are currently under investigations for allegedly pocketing millions of public funds through corrupt dealings.
In recent days, fighting corruption has emerged as a key agenda, with Interior PS Karanja Kiibicho admitting in an affidavit that corruption has gained by 240% in the last five years of President Kenyatta's administration.
