There was drama at the Embakasi East constituency tallying centre after the winning certificate for the Member of Parliament reportedly went missing.
Angry supporters of ODM’s Babu Owino caused a commotion at the tallying centre as they protested the disappearance of the certificate alleging that there was a plot to deny the former SONU chairman victory.
Owino claimed that the Embakasi East Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) returning officer whom he said had been replaced by the commission’s chairperson Wafula Chebukati had misplaced his certificate.
“We are not going to accept anything else than the certificate. I am aware there are plans to deny me victory and the people of Embakasi East have chosen their leader,” Owino said.
An agitated Owino demanded answers from the IEBC after he claimed that the returning officer had instructions to deny him the certificate according to Nairobi News.
However, the certificate was later found among other documents with the deputy returning officer.
Owino had earlier been declared the MP-elect for Embakasi East in a tight race which saw him garnering 43, 862 votes against his main challenger Jubilee’s Francis Mureithi who had 39, 805 votes.
