What will happen in Kitui West after death of Francis Nyenze

NASA MP Francis Nyenze died today and this is what awaits his Constituency.

Kitui West on Tuesday became the first Constituency to lose its Member of Parliament following the untimely death of Mr. Francis Nyenze.

Nyenze, who has been ailing for a while now died at Nairobi Hospital where he has been receiving treatment.

His demise has left Kitui West without an MP but not for long according to the constitution.

Following his death, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) is required to hold a by-election in the region.

Constitution

According to the law, the Speaker of the National Assembly Justin Muturi is expected to give IEBC notice of the vacancy within 21 days.

After this, a by-election shall be held within ninety days of the occurrence of the vacancy

After he was elected to the Kitui West parliamentary seat, an ailing Nyenze, 60, went to Parliament with an oxygen tank strapped on him  to take his oath of office.

Though he appeared frail Mr. Nyenze tried to put on brave outlook and greeted journalists cheerfully

"How are you are friends...mimi pia nimefika (I’ve also made it) for the swearing-in," he said.
