Following President Uhuru Kenyatta’s yesterday ultimatum to striking doctors to either return back to work or face the sack, Kenyatta National Hospital today made the threat true.

KNH has sacked 12 doctors for taking part in the strike and 48 others are facing disciplinary action over strike.

CEO Lily Koros while addressing the media at the hospital said the doctors had been advised against participating in the strike since the strike was illegal and moreover they were not protected under the law.

“A circular was also issued warning the doctors and other staff that disciplinary and other administrative action(s) were to be taken against those who participated in the strike”

Koros further added that 48 doctors were issued with show cause letters in January and were undergoing disciplinary action.

"The management is now escalating the disciplinary process to have cases determined expeditiously to the full extent provided by the law," she said.

She directed all striking doctors employed by the Kenya's biggest teaching and referral hospital to return to work.

“All doctors employed by KNH are hereby directed to be in their duty stations with immediate effect or face disciplinary action that may include summary dismissal, eviction from hospital quarters and any other administrative action deemed necessary” she said.

She finalized by directing all interns and post graduate students to immediately resume back to work.

“As per the Presidential directive, the Post graduate students (Registrars) who are being sponsored by the government and the interns who are currently on internship are directed to report to their duty stations with immediate effect or face administrative action deemed appropriate including eviction from Hospital quarters”
