A mother is facing attempted murder charges after throwing her baby off a bridge because she was depressed.
23-year-old Carla Regina Mendes threw baby Thayller over the barrier of the bridge in Sao Luis, on Sunday afternoon, in front of shocked passersby.
Suffocating
Officers Herberth Ribeiro and Danilo Pestana were returning from training at about 2:00 p.m. when they saw the commotion.
They quickly ran into the stagnant swampy river and searched for the child.
Officer Pestana said that it was difficult to locate the baby. “We could only see her head sticking out of the mud. We could see that she was being suffocated and that the mud was in her mouth,” he said.
Screamed loudly
The mud made it difficult for the officers to reach the child, but they managed to get her out alive.
“When we got to her and took her out, she screamed loudly in our arms and that was the best sound we could hear as it made us so happy that she was alive,” Officer Pestana said.
The girl was taken to an ambulance that waiting nearby. A paramedic quickly cleaned her airway. Thayller was then rushed to a hospital, where she is recovering.
Mental
Mendes, who was arrested at the scene, told the police that she has been suffering from mental health problems and depression.
A judge ordered her to undergo a psychiatric evaluation.
