Kenya dominated the 42nd World Cross-Country Championships on 25 March in Kampala Uganda with Geoffrey Kamworor defending his mens title.

Irene Cheptai led a historic clean sweep in the women's race with five Kenyan taking position 1to 6 for a first-ever podium of the East African running Champions.

Uganda's Joshua Cheptegei had led for most of the race, to the delight of the home crowd, with dozens of Ugandans running alongside him.

But there was drama as he collapsed in the final lap, eventually recovering to hobble over the line in 30th place

Kenya proved to be even more dominant in the women's race, with Irene Cheptai leading five of her teammates to make history in the IAAF Cross Country that witnessed stiff competition.

Cheptai, who was seventh at the world championships in Guiyang two years ago, clocked 31:57 around the 10km course. Silver went to Alice Nawowuna and bronze to Lilian Rengeruk.

Defending champion Agnes Tirop came fifth and Olympic 1,500m champion Faith Kipyegon was sixth in the IAAF Cross Country Championship.

This was the first time for ugand to host such a big event on the East African Soil makin it the 4 Country in Africa to host this magnificent event.

The IAAF Cross Country was making its 44-year history since it was started across the world.

Uganda’s president Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and the first lady, Janet Museveni, graced the IAAF Cross Country Championships at Kololo Stadium.

Other dignitaries included the IAAF president Sebatisan Coe and his African based vice president Hamad Kalkaba, Minister of Presidency in charge of Kampala Betty Namisango Kamya were some of the other high profile personalities at Kololo.

The next edition will be held in Denmark, 2019.
