Four candidates have thrown their hearts in the ring to run for the governor seat in Mombasa County.

    Mr. Suleiman Said Shahbal served as the Managing Director of GulfCap Group and Gulf Investments Limited. He has over 23 years’ experience in banking with large multinational and regional financial institutions.

    Mr. Shahbal previously worked with BankMuscat, the largest investment and commercial bank in Oman, where he served as Deputy General Manager of International Operations. Prior to BankMuscat, Mr. Shahbal served as Vice President of Citibank in the Middle East and Europe. He served as the Chairman of Gulf African Bank (Kenya) until September 2012.

    He served as a Director of Dalma Energy LLC until June 21, 2016. Mr. Shahbal is the Member of Investment Committee at Mid-East Division of The Novati Group. He is a U.S. graduate in Business and Finance. He joined politics in 2013 running as the governor for Mombasa County.

      Born in Kisauni, Mombasa, Governor Joho holds a B.A in Business and Human Resource Management from Kampala University and various diplomas in business, shipping, logistics and ICT.

      He is the immediate former Member of Parliament for Kisauni Constituency following the 2007 general election.

      Governor Joho is the National Deputy party Leader of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM). Prior to becoming the governor, Governor Joho served as the Assistant Minister for Transport; as Deputy Chairman of the Foreign, Defense & Election Committee; as Library Committee Member of Transport, Housing & Public Works. His running mate is Professor William Kingi Kazungu, his former secretary.

      In 2013 he got 132,583 votes against his close rival Suleiman Said Saleh Shahbal (Wiper) who had 94,905.

        Hassan Omar Hassan is the Senator of Mombasa County. He is a lawyer.

        He is also a past a Commissioner and Vice Chairperson of the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR), a constitutional commission and the lead government agency in the promotion and protection of Human Rights in Kenya.

        Currently as Senator, Hassan is the Vice Chairperson of the Senate's Sessional Committee on County Public Accounts and Investments and a member of the Standing Committee on Legal Affairs and Human Rights. He is also a member of the Sessional Committee on Devolved Governments.

        Hassan is the Secretary General of the Wiper Democratic Movement Party - Kenya, one of three parties that make up the opposition Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (CORD). Hassan serves as a member of the Management Committee of CORD which Committee is responsible for running the affairs of the Coalition.

          Hezron Awiti Bollo was born in Mombasa County. His ancestral village is in Kendu Bay in Homa Bay County. He is the first time MP for Nyali Constituency in Mombasa County elected on a Wiper ticket, then in Cord.

          In the National Assembly he is a member of Departmental Committee on Agriculture, Livestock and Co-operatives and also a member of Departmental Committee on Lands and Natural Resources.

          Hezron Awiti Bollo is a Belgium trained logistics manager has been in the freight and forwarding industry for over twenty five years. He is the Chief Executive Officer of Habo Group of Companies, the Company he founded in 1995 in Mombasa Kenya.

          He also owns Metal Refinery EPZ Limited, a lead smelting company in Owino Uhuru Village in Mombasa, whose waste has allegedly killed dozens of people in the area.

          Hezron Awiti is also the Chairman of Kenya International Freighter Warehousing Association. He will be vying on VDM to unseat Hassan Joho.
