Education Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed has warned Helb beneficiaries who have not been keeping up with their payments that police will be coming for them.

The warning came as Helb seeks to recover over 7.2 billion owed by 74,000 defaulters.

We are also going to partner with our law enforcement agencies to track down those holding jobs and yet are reluctant to stand up to be counted as responsible and patriotic citizens who honour their debts,” CS Amina said.

Going after defaulters

Police are expected to begin the crackdown of loan defaulters immediately and the Ministry asked employers to help track them down.

Helb chief executive Charles Ringera said they are also seeking to partner with the Foreign Affairs ministry to track defaulters in the diaspora.

We are having a large number of graduates leaving the country to work abroad majority who have defaulted,” Mr Ringera said.

The Education CS stated that Ksh7.2 was yet to be repaid adding that defaulters will be tracked through their M-Pesa and Airtel Money transactions.

Qualifying for helb

"We hope by doing we will increase the resources that are available to HELB to support others," Amina stated.

"We want them to become reliable and responsible citizens by repaying their debt,” she added.

Nearly 350,000 students are hoping to qualify for the Sh13.7 billion higher education loans they have applied for.
