Army benefits that make it attractive to many Kenyans abroad

One of the strongest motivations for Kenyans joining the U.S. Army is the promise of consistent earnings. Service members receive regular pay that grows with time and rank, accompanied by tax-free allowances for housing and food

For a long time, Kenyans have relocated abroad and chosen to join the United States Army, drawn by the benefits that come with military service.

From ordinary citizens to well-known personalities, this path has attracted a growing number of Kenyans seeking new beginnings and professional growth.

Among those who have enlisted are former rugby player Horace Otieno, Churchill Show comedians Briggedia Generali and Karis Comedian, and actor Paul Ogola.

Ogola, who featured notably in the Kenyan series 'Crime and Justice' graduated as the top sailor from the U.S. Navy's Recruit Training Command (RTC).

Former Churchill Show Comedian Francis Onono, aka Brigeddia General, on the other hand, graduated from the US Army Academy in April 2021.

Their decisions mirror a trend where Kenyans abroad look beyond conventional careers and consider the U.S. military as a route towards financial stability, education, and personal development.

1. Financial and career security

One of the most compelling reasons Kenyans abroad join the U.S. military is the promise of financial stability.

Members of the military receive a steady salary that increases with rank and years of service, along with allowances for housing.

In addition to salaries, bonuses are also available, depending on the role and specialisation. Signing and bonuses can be significant, particularly in specialised fields where the Army has a higher demand.

Beyond financial rewards, the military offers job security and training in highly specialised fields.

Service members gain hands-on experience and earn certifications that are recognised beyond the military, which strengthens their career prospects once they transition into civilian life.

2. Educational opportunities

Education is another powerful draw for Kenyans who join the U.S. Army.

The Post-9/11 GI Bill provides extensive financial support for higher education and vocational training for active duty members and veterans. It covers tuition, fees, and even provides a housing allowance while studying.

For those still serving, tuition assistance programmes make it possible to take classes alongside their military commitments.

3. Healthcare

Comprehensive healthcare is one of the standout benefits of joining the U.S. military. Service members and their families are covered.

This includes medical, dental, and eye care. For many Kenyans who may have struggled with expensive health insurance costs abroad, this is an invaluable advantage.

The retirement system is another strong incentive. The Blended Retirement System combines a pension with a savings plan enabling members to build secure finances for the future.

Alongside this, each service member enjoys 30 days of paid vacation annually, a generous allowance compared to many civilian jobs.

The military also provides subsidised housing or housing allowances, making it easier for families to settle comfortably. Moreover, the travel opportunities are immense.

Service members are posted in different parts of the world, giving them exposure to new cultures and experiences.

Free financial counselling and tax consultations are provided, ensuring that members and their families are equipped to manage their money wisely. This support system is one of the reasons many Kenyans feel secure taking this path.

A path worth considering

The decision to enlist in the U.S. military is not one to be taken lightly, but for many Kenyans abroad it has proven to be a rewarding journey. From financial stability and education to healthcare and community, the benefits are extensive and transformative.
