Chief Justice Martha Koome has expressed deep sorrow following the passing of Hon. John Tito Kunyuk, the Principal Kadhi at the Nakuru Law Courts.
Kunyuk, who succumbed to a prolonged illness, was described as a dedicated judicial officer and a passionate scholar.

A distinguished career in the Judiciary
Hon. Kunyuk joined the Judiciary in January 2013 as a Resident Kadhi at the Kajiado Law Courts.
Over the years, his career saw him serve in various stations, including Isiolo, Kakuma, Kisumu, and Nakuru, where he consistently upheld the principles of justice.
Chief Justice Koome highlighted his professionalism, noting, “Throughout his career, Hon. Kunyuk exemplified the virtues of diligence, fairness, and professionalism in all his judicial duties.”
Contributions to scholarship and community
Beyond his judicial duties, Hon. Kunyuk was known for his scholarly contributions.
His academic work focused on Islamic Family Law, the history and jurisprudence of the Kadhis' Court in Kenya, and the culture and literature of his Turkana community.
“Hon. Kunyuk was widely recognised as an avid reader and researcher with a passion for scholarly pursuits,” remarked the Chief Justice.
He was also actively involved in community and charity programmes in his home county of Turkana, reflecting his deep commitment to societal welfare.
