Following the death of three people whio succumbed after consuming illicit alcohol in Nakuru, the Ministry of Health has released a statement urging Kenyans to prioritise their safety when consuming alcoholic beverages during the festive season.
The statement released by Public Health and Professional Standards Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni on Sunday, December 22, 2024, emphasised the need for caution regarding unregulated alcoholic drinks in the country.
The State Department of Public Health and Professional Standards is deeply saddened by the tragic loss of three lives in Nakuru County following the consumption of illicit alcohol.
Consuming these substances can lead to serious health consequences including blindness, organ damage and even death.
How to prioritise safety
The Ministry of Health outlined how Kenyans who consume alcohol can prioritise their safety by:
Only consuming alcohol that is legally registered and licensed by government agencies. This ensures that alcohol has undergone proper quality control and meets safety standards.
Avoiding purchases alcohol from unknown or untrustworthy sources. Be wary of suspiciously cheap or counterfeit products.
Practising responsible alcohol consumption. Avoid excessive drinking especially during the festive season.
