Detectives have launched a manhunt for Al-Shabaab militant believed to be behind last weekend’s daring attack that left 11 police officers dead in Garissa County.
Citizen TV reports that the suspect identified as Abdullahi Banati led a team of militants that set up the Improvised Explosive Devices (IED) which resulted in the deaths of the GSU officers.
Police have appealed to members of the public with any information that could lead to the arrest of the wanted suspect to report it to them immediately.
Police sources believe Banati worked closely with other Al Shabaab operatives based at the Daadab refugee camp.
The vast camp which hosts hundreds of thousands of refugees from war-torn Somalia has been linked with several other terrorist activities in the past.
A statement from the police read in part that “Police have traced the activities of Banati and his team of militants to the border and it is suspected that he escaped to Somalia with the rest of the operatives”.
He is believed to have escaped into Somalia shortly after last week’s attack.
The wanted militant reportedly joined the terrorist group in 2012 and participated in the attack on Baure Kenya Defense Forces (KDF) camp in 2015 where 11 militants were killed.
He escaped with injuries and went into hiding, only to resurface three years later to conduct attacks along the Somalia border.
