Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery is dead.

Nkaissery died a few hours after he was admitted to Karen Hospital in Nairobi for a medical check-up.

In a statement, Chief of Staff and Head of the Public Service Joseph Kinyua confirmed the news early Saturday morning.

“It is with deep sorrow and shock that we announce the sudden passing on of Interior CS Retired General Joseph Nkaissery. The country will be updated as more information becomes available,” the statement from Kinyua read.

Nkaissery was 67 years at the time of his untimely death.

His body has been transferred to Lee Funeral Home in Nairobi.

In 2014, President Uhuru Kenyatta appointed Nkaissery to head the Ministry of Interior and Coordination to replace Joseph Ole Lenku.

He was an ODM member of parliament for Kajiado Central constituency under the Opposition, Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) before his cabinet appointment.
