In a significant step towards environmental sustainability, NCBA, in collaboration with The Baboon Project Kenya (BPK), this past week, planted and donated 10,000 trees across various schools in Nakuru County to commemorate World Environment Day.

This initiative underscores NCBA's dedication to combating climate change, enhancing biodiversity, and restoring natural landscapes in Kenya, aligning with this year’s theme: Focusing on land restoration, desertification, and drought resilience.

The Baboon Project Kenya, a conservation initiative established in 2021 in Nakuru, collaborates with the Kenya Forest Service to conserve the environment, particularly through the Green School Program.

This program, designed to align with the Climate Change Act of 2016, emphasises tree planting to increase awareness among students and promote conservation efforts within schools and their surrounding communities.

Mr John Gachora, Group Managing Director of NCBA, expressed his excitement about the collaboration with Baboon Project Kenya. He reiterated that the bank’s commitment to growing and nurturing trees reflects a profound sense of responsibility and demonstrates the role they can play in protecting the planet.

“Through the planting of these 10,000 tree seedlings, we aim to make a tangible contribution to Kenya's natural heritage and sow the seeds of a sustainable and resilient future for generations to come," he said.

The Tree Planting and Growing Campaign is among the 15 ambitious sustainability commitments NCBA pledged under its "Change The Story" platform.

This platform aims to execute environmental initiatives in collaboration with strategic partners, including the government and the private sector.

Through these partnerships, NCBA has committed to growing 10 million trees by 2030. The bank also aims to foster a culture of conservation and environmental responsibility that will benefit future generations.

Some of the other commitments include fully eliminating single-use plastics, ensuring 100% waste recycling, greening the supply chain, and investing significantly in electric vehicles (EV). These bold commitments will catalyse action towards a greener and more sustainable future.

Simon Gichohi, the founder of Baboon Project Kenya, emphasized the strategic importance of the partnership with NCBA.

“We are honored to have made this strategic partnership with NCBA, with whom we share the commitment to conserve the environment by planting trees. Tree planting is not just about adding greenery to our landscapes, it's about sowing the seeds of hope for future generations. Each tree we plant today stands as a testament to our commitment to environmental stewardship, a promise to nurture and protect our planet," Gichohi stated.

The presence of key partners like Ahadi Kenya Trust, Ushiriki Wema, Baboon Project Kenya, the Kenya Forestry Service, and members of the community underscored the collective commitment to Kenya's environmental welfare.

Climate action and community well-being were highlighted as everyone's responsibility, with a call to actively participate in creating a better, more sustainable future.
