I got it because I deserve it - Ben Githae responds to online hate over Head of State commendation
The Gospel singer behind the ‘Tano Tena’ anthem has spoken.

Those who took the worst hits for their commendation were Jacque Maribe, Ben Githae, Dennis Itumbi, Githeriman and Hassan Wario. Kenyans even took to social media to recommend those they thought deserved the award more through #KOTCommends.
Following the hate online, Gospel singer Ben Githae has spoken of the commendation that has caused the outrage.
“Well, tangu nilipokua sijajulikana nilikua naona hizo awards zikipatiwa akina Esther Wahome, Eric Wainanina na Kamaru. Mara yangu ya kwanza niliingia kwa ofisi ya Kamaru nilipata hiyo picha ya award imewekwa kwa ukuta and when I asked mzee hii nayo inaitwa nini he told me it’s an award that he was given by former Kenyan President Daniel Arap Moi for his contribution to the country and at that time, no one complained.” He told Word Is. (Before I was famous I saw those awards given to other musicians like Eric Wainanina, Esther Wahome and Joseph Kamaru. The first time I walked into Kamaru’s office, I saw the award hanged on the wall and I asked him what it was. And he told me it’s an award that he was given by former Kenyan President Daniel Arap Moi for his contribution to the country and at that time, no one complained.)

The musician then went on to express that he was happy that his time for recognition had come and people should not just look at his ‘Tano Tena’ song and assume that that is what got him the commendation as has contributed more to the industry.
“My contribution to this artiste world has been recognised by the President. What I would like to tell them is that favor is very unfair. Me kwanza ni msanii wa Gospel sana ata kuliko vile nilifanya hiyo ya ‘Tano Tena’.” He noted.
The ‘Mabataro Makwa’ singer revealed that the reason he got the award was that he is favoured by God as there are many musicians who do their best to get their music to sell but it doesn’t sell as they do not have God’s favour. But there are those who drink alcohol and hang with ladies but their songs still hit and people line up to get their music as they have unmerited grace.
“It is called unmerited grace yani ukipata kibali kwa king ata mwingine akuje afanye somersault but God akisema Ni Ben Githae amepata favour that is how it will be. He said.
