Kenyan politics can be very messy with politicians being heckled and booed by intolerant crowds. But on extreme cases politicians end up with grave injuries after being attacked by thugs or just by a member of the crowd.

In 2014, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga and Kwale Governor Salim Mvurya were beaten with a walking stick during an Okoa Kenya campaign in Kwale County. The attacker Lengo Karisa Mdzomba was said to have been instigated by the two politicians’ Okoa Kenya words at the rally.

“Wanasema wanataka kuokoaKenya, lakini Kenya imeshaokolewa. Wanataka kuokoa nini? Wanaoendelea kuteseka ni wananchi. (They say they want to save Kenya, yet Kenya is already saved (from colonialism); What  do they want to save? The less-fortunate citizens are the ones suffering).” he griped.

Earlier that year, Uhuru Kenyatta was also heckled and had shoes thrown at him in Migori County.

But perhaps the worst case of violence is the kind that was levelled against Vitimbi’s Nyasuguta who is vying for the Embakasi South MP seat.

She suffered the ugly side of politics after she was attacked and viciously beaten by thugs at Mukuru kwa Reuben where she had gone to visit some women.

Speaking to Word Is, Nyasuguta said “Three men attacked me as one of them kept watch. They punched my face and hit me with a wooden rod on my neck and back. I kept telling them, take the money I had but they did not steal anything from me. One of them even told me, 'Hatuna njaa ya pesa.' (We are not hungry for money). They later told me that 'Embakasi iko na wenyewe'. (Embakasi constituency has its owners)"

The attack left her with bleeding ears and a busted lip among other injuries.

Taking to Facebook the politician moaned the fate that had befallen her:

“Feeling unwell after the merciless attack may Jehovah heal me.” She wrote.

This is not the first time that Nyasuguta has bore the brunt of dirty politics. She revealed that she has been receiving threats that she will be undressed for pursuing that seat and has even had her car vandalised .

But despite this horrifying event, the actress has chosen not to press charges. "I have forgiven those goons and the master who sent them. All I want to have is a peaceful campaign and to let the people decide." she told Word Is.
