On Wednesday, the sudden demise of legendary singer Oliver Mtukudzi saddened many people across he globe.
Kenyan Musician and the queen of Benga Music Suzzana Owino, joined the world in mourning Mtukudzi while disclosing the last conversation he had with the singer during the Dusit complex attack.
Ms Owiyo shared screen shots, where the renowned star from Zimbabwe was checking on her, the day terrorists attacked innocent people at Dusit.
In the WhatsApp communication, Mtukudzi, expressed his concerns about the safety of Nairobi City, asking if Ms Owiyo was safe.
“Happy new year to you too my sister. Are you safe my sister? I pray for your safety” reads a message from Mtukudzi.
Suzzana replied saying “Yes am Safe. Thanks for checking. Be Blessed”.
“Tuku my dear brother, tell me it’s not true. Just the other day you checked on me..trying to find out if I was safe after #DusitHotel terror attack. I celebrate you. Africa has lost a true gem, an Icon, a Legend. Shine on my brother. It is well Oliver Mtukudzi #RIPTuku,” reads Suzzan Owiyo’s post.
66 Albums
The 66-year-old music superstar, with 66 albums to his name, had been battling diabetes for some time and had been admitted to the hospital in the past month.
Although there is yet to be an official statement, sources said Tuku died on Wednesday at the Avenue Clinic in Harare.
On Tuesday, he failed to attend ZBC Coca-Cola winner’s prize-giving ceremony due to the illness.
Toured several countries
Mtukudzi is one of Africa’s greatest musicians and he has toured several countries. He has been to all five continents of the world, playing in world capitals and at top festivals.
Until his death, he held various prestigious positions, among them the goodwill ambassador for United Nations Children’s Fund and the coveted Cavaliere of the Order of Merit bestowed to him by the Italian government.
