Kenyan mother sells child for Sh10, 000

She needed the money to help raise her other two children.

A 25 year old Kenyan mother was charged in a Kitui court this Tuesday for selling her child for Sh10, 000.

She had been arraigned in court over child trafficking charges along with the alleged buyer.

According to reports, the mother gave birth at Kanyangi Health Centre in Kitui Rural on December 29th 2017 where she then proceeded to sell the baby to Ms Bernadette Musanya on January 1st 2018.

The newborn was rescued by police from the buyer just as she was planning to leave Machakos County. Police were alerted by neighbours of the mother who alarmed by the absence of the child and reported her as missing to the police.

The two women pleaded guilty and are being remanded as they await further trial.

The child's custody will be determined by the Department of Children Services before a ruling is made.

The mother- who works as a domestic cleaner to make ends meet- further explained to the court that she sold her baby because she couldn't afford to raise her along with her two other children.
