28 year old nearly dies after chewing on his nails

What he contracted is the leading cause of death of people in hospitals.

"I bit the nail and it pulled down the side of my nail and got infected," Luke Hanoman, 28, told BuzzFeed News.

Afterwards, he started getting chills, cold sweats and fever among other flu-like symptoms.

His finger swelled and started throbbing and he had trouble focusing.

Hanoman thought he just needed rest but ended up sleeping until late the following afternoon. His mother got worried about him, after recognising the symptoms.

After calling the National Health Service hot line, they were instructed to go to hospital immediately.

Hanoman ended up staying at the hospital for four days on intravenous antibiotics due to sepsis.

Sepsis is a massive immune response to an infection that can lead to a drop in blood pressure, organ failure, and death.

According to World Sepsis Day website, sepsis kills a person every 3-4 seconds in the world.

It is the leading cause of death in people who are already hospialised.

Waiting too long to seek treatment can lead to tissue damage and even death.

The symptoms for sepsis are:

Anyone can get sepsis from any infection.

People over 65, have donated an organ or have a weakened system due to treatment such as a chemo are at higher risk.

The most common infection sources for sepsis are pneumonia, urinary tract infections and skin infections.
