6 reasons why your period is super heavy

Why is my period so heavy?

Although different women bleed differently, it should be a concern if you have to change your tampon after every two hours or less and you should seek medical attention.

There are various reasons as to why you may be experiencing heavy menstrual bleeding such as:

1. Polycystic ovarian syndrome

This condition which is also a major cause of infertility in women is associated to irregular and infrequent periods. The condition is characterized by growths around the cervix or the uterus resulting from high estrogen levels or infections. And because the periods are not regular, the lining takes longer to thicken thus bleeding more.

2. Fibroids

These growths are non-cancerous but may lead to heavy menstrual bleeding as well as infertility. Research has it that 10% of women who experience heavy periods have fibroids.

3. Endometriosis

This condition involves the growth of tissues similar to those lining the uterus elsewhere besides the uterus. When a woman has her periods, the linings also bleed leading to heavy periods.

4. Hormonal imbalances

Hormonal imbalances leads to irregular ovulation and this affects your periods. When your thyroid hormones are under active, it ends up affecting your menstrual cycle. See more on signs of hormonal imbalance.

5. Bleeding disorders

Though not common, some women suffer from bleeding disorders that makes blood clotting difficult. This may run in your bloodline and can be diagnosed through blood tests. If it’s difficult for you to stop bleeding whenever you are cut or nose bleeding, it could be a bleeding disorder.

This method of birth control may also lead to heavy periods if the device does not contain hormones.
