Do certain foods cause miscarriage? medical expert speaks

Women carrying pregnancy for the first time are always searching for advice on how to walk through this path that is obviously new to them.

For this concern, plive.co.ke sought to get expert advice from Mercy Wambui, a nurse at Nanyuki Teaching & Referral Hospital.

Ms Wambui divulged that though some medical research showed that certain foods could cause miscarriage (which medics refer to as abortion), the common cause is usually hormonal imbalance.

According to the nurse abnormal hormone levels may push women to abnormal labour, as the condition causes the uterine lining not to develop sufficiently for the implantation and nourishment of the fertilized egg.

“Fibroids also causes miscarriage.  I have witnessed many women prematurely losing their infants because of fibroids,” Wambui disclosed.

Do foods cause Miscarriage?

The nurse mentioned that proven Studies had indicated that consumption of alcohol and caffeine could cause miscarriage.

In reference to specifics food that could cause miscarriage, Wambui noted that she could not boldly ascertain the fact.

“During the first three months of pregnancy some medics advise mothers to refrain from drinking pineapple juice as it leads to the contraction of uterus, which may cause miscarriage," she stated.

Nonetheless, Wambui noted that a proper diet was good enough to ensure that miscarriage does not occur.

“For anemic women, a proper diet is very critical to ensure that blood production is sufficient," she noted.

Other causes of miscarriages

She added that there have been cases of women inserting Intrauterine Device (IUD) when unaware that they were pregnant and ended up losing the infant.

Genital tract infection, maternal diabetes, cervical incompetence, rhesus incompatibility, trauma among others also can lead to miscarriage.

Nurse Wambui advised pregnant women to visit a gynecologist in case they experienced multiple miscarriages.

"Before getting pregnant again, I would say it is important to see a gynecologist and if you have had several miscarriages, it is even more critical to get a medical expert to examine you,” Wambui noted.
