Fifth largest diamond in the world found in Lesotho

The diamond is estimated to be worth $40 million.

It was discovered in the Letseng mine by Botswana and Lesotho-based UK miners Gem Diamonds on Monday.

Gem Diamonds had also, in 2006, discovered a 603 carat diamond dubbed ‘Lesotho Promise’ but the recent diamond is the largest diamond discovered so far.

“This exceptional top quality diamond is the largest to be mined to date. This is a landmark discovery,”Gem Diamonds Chief Executive Clifford Elphick stated.

The diamond is described to be the size of two tennis balls.

Nine out of ten of the largest diamonds in the world have been discovered in Africa before this latest one in Lesotho. Four in South Africa, two in Sierra Leone, two in the Democratic Republic of Congo and one in Botswana.
