Words carry a certain kind of power that can easily be irredeemable. Itâs all in context and at the work place, words could either get you promoted, fighting your bosses or just straight up fired.
Thatâs why itâs wise to pick your words however close they are to the truth. Dr Travis Bradberry in an article shared on Linkedin Pulse stated, âEmotionally intelligent people know that certain phrases carry special powerâthey make you look bad even when the words are true.â
This is the reality of most work places hence the need to watch what you say. Luckily he also listed down a number of things smart people donât say. Read on.
1. âItâs not fair.â
This shows your level of immaturity. Instead of taking this stance, you can instead ask something like this, âWhat made you come to that decision? Is there anything I can do to change it?â
2. âThis is the way itâs always been done.â
We live in fast developing world, itâs easy to be left behind. However, saying things like, âThis is the way itâs always been doneâ makes you look less innovative, resistance to change and very lazy.
3. âI think/This might be a silly idea/Iâm going to ask a stupid question.â
Dude, whose going to believe you when you donât seem to yourself. Itâs not humility, its career suicide. If youâre not sure then ask for time to research. Youâll be respected for your honesty rather than second guessing yourself.
4. This will only take a minute
This is meant to make you look efficient (which it does) until it makes your seem impractical. You know, when it takes an hour longer than what your boss expected. Thereâs no need to raise expectations unless youâre sure that you can do it.
5. Iâll try
This shows your lack of confidence in yourself. Instead, accept the work and do your best. If you canât hack it, then at least the bosses know that you gave it your best shot. No one is blamed for that.
6. Itâs not my job description
We kid you not, human resource will get wind of it. Itâs in your best interest to âseemâ like a hard worker who is ready to take up whatever roles that are coming your way. If you donât feel like doing it, just apologise and say that youâre swamped with your work already. Be careful with how you phrase it.
7. Heâs incompetent
Because who made you boss?
No one likes a judgy Nancy at the office. There is no alternative to this one. Just keep your colleaguesâ names out of your mouth. Unless youâre praising their good work.
The worst is if they prove you wrong and you end up looking like a jerk.
8. Itâs not my fault
Take blame when itâs your turn to do it, keep quiet and correct later if youâre dealing with authority. Especially when there are more people around you. Instead of passing blame, listen to what the boss has to say and if you still donât feel like taking blame just acknowledge that youâve heard what they had to say and that you will put it into consideration.
