On Tuesday, the Nyeri High Court convicted Daniel Karonji, David Gituku and Daniel Wachira for killing Lucy Wangui at her home at Gatuiga village in Nyeri County.
Wangui is said to have had multiple cut wounds and burns on different parts of her body which turned fatal.
Revenge mission
The court heard that the three men were Wangui's neighbours and they killed her while on a revenge mission after she testified against Karonji and Gituku in Nyeri Chief Magistrates’ Court Criminal Case No. 5461 of 2003.
In that case the accused had been charged with robbery with violence contrary as they were alleged to have robbed the deceased and injured her in the process.
They were convicted and sentenced to death; however, they lodged a successful appeal against both the conviction and sentence.
Torture
Court documents showed that they were retried and acquitted just four weeks before the deceased was attacked.
David Mwangi, a man who worked for Wangui, told the court that on the fateful night he heard the deceased scream and as he ran to her house to help her he found that she had been set ablaze.
He told the court that the three men were attacking her as she was sitting with her back against the wall.
