Six members from the same family have died after a road in Naivasha.

The death toll rose on Wednesday after the last survivor died in hospital while receiving treatment.

Reports from the family indicated that the six victims were travelling to Naivasha for a relative's funeral when the crash occurred along the Nairobi-Nakuru highway.

Head-on collision

Naivasha Deputy OCPD John Kwasa said the driver of the saloon car was overtaking a long queue of vehicles when the car was hit by the two trailers.

The saloon car was hit head-on by a trailer truck near River Malewa and then rammed on the side by another truck, killing five passengers.

A relative, Martin Ndung'u, said, “I have lost my sister and two nieces, while the others are my cousins and a grandson, who were all in the vehicle.”

He added: "This is a very painful moment for the family, but we are praying for strength as we prepare to lay them to rest."

NTSA statistics

According to statistics by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), males are the victims of road traffic fatalities than females.

The latest survey by NTSA indicates that 85.5% of fatalities are males while 16.7% are females.

By October 14 this year, 2,263 men had lost their lives on the roads compared to 1,927 who perished in 2018. On the other hand, 427 females had succumbed on the road in 2019.
